The Many Faces of the LBD

Advice for Petites

Fashion tips for petites of all sizes are available free of charge at About.com: Petite Fashion.

Paula Darnell's current issue discusses ways to add a pop of color to the slim monochromatic look. She uses a versatile LBD (little black dress) to work her magic with jewelery, scarf and toppers.

Paula's article inspired me to play dress-up with my favourite LBD made from our All Season Dress #303.

If you're unfamiliar with the term monochromatic, it refers to the predominant use of one colour in a grouping. It can be any colour, but black is a popular choice. When one colour is worn top and bottom, the result is a long fluid, slim silouhette - flattering for a woman. The danger in dressing monochromatically is that it can become boring unless interest is added through colour and texture in pieces like toppers, jewelery and other accessories.

How to Extend a Little Black Dress

A scarf or shawl adds color and changes the mood of our LBD.

The beautiful silk printed salmon scarf shown above was purchased from my artist friend, Denise Aleksich here in Sointula.

The romantic silver chiffon shawl shown at right is made from a 45 inch square, finished on the serger with matching thread and a rolled edge foot.

Easy, peasy!

The sea green of this cardigan made from our pattern #102 Sweater Twin Set introduces a fresh light touch.

The cardigan's length maintains an overall slimness.

A belt and favourite pendant finish a simple ensemble.

A Shapely Shirt #104 worn under, turns the LBD into a very cute little jumper.

The lavender shirt is in a cotton poplin blend.

Note the French cuffs - on trend for this season.

Here, the Shapely Shirt #104 is worn over as a topper, covering the arms plus adding color and pattern interest with its vertical stripes.

What a Jacket Will Do for the LBD

Here's how the same little black dress goes from casual to dressy with a change of jacket.

The color trend for fall is pumped up and this bright Jeans Jacket #204 takes the LBD casual.

In batik rayon, our Simple Slimming Jacket from Perfect Plus takes the LBD up a notch or two. This light-weight topper is unlined and quick to make.

I had fun going through my jewelery box, experimenting with different necklaces for each grouping. The neckline on the All Season Dress is a great backdrop for your favourite jewelry.

Here's our Simple Slimming Jacket from Perfect Plus again. This time the jacket is made in a novelty metallic weave and fully lined, taking the LBD to a more formal event.

Pattern and directions for both lined and unlined versions of the jacket are included in Perfect Plus.

The Wrap Jacket #203 in black & turquoise silk tweed maintains a slim, monochromatic look.

The collar and lapels in turquoise shantung silk add vibrant color at the neckline.

Wrap Jacket #203 has three views. Shown here is View A.

The All Season Dress #303 has three sleeve options.

As the season changes and you begin fall sewing, I hope that we've inspired fresh ways for you to wear and enjoy your little black dress.

From all of us at Petite Plus Patterns, happy sewing!
